In this month’s perspective, Cecilia Edebo reflects on her first year as CEO of Sahlgrenska Science Park (SSP) – a year marked by growth, collaboration, and bold steps toward accelerating health innovation from West Sweden.

Edebo highlights the strength of the region’s life science ecosystem, anchored by global companies like AstraZeneca, Mölnlycke Health Care, Getinge, and Vitrolife, and powered by a vibrant start-up scene nurtured through SSP’s CO-AX Accelerator. Together with academic excellence from Chalmers, Sahlgrenska Academy, and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, SSP continues to shape the future of healthcare.

A key initiative is Health Innovation West, the regional cluster SSP facilitates, now home to over 500 life science companies. Another major milestone is the launch of the Sahlgrenska Global Health Hackathon, a bold, inclusive event tackling five global health challenges by uniting international and cross-sector partners.

SSP is also a key contributor to PRECISEU, a European project advancing personalized healthcare and scaling deep-tech health innovations across regions.

Looking ahead, Edebo emphasizes the importance of bridging innovation and implementation, building capabilities from research to real-world impact, and strengthening partnerships to ensure health solutions reach patients and markets.

With gratitude for the past year and optimism for the future, she reaffirms SSP’s commitment to long-term impact—driven by passion, persistence, and co-action.
