  1. What if one of the keys to healing difficult wounds was something our bodies already produce - electricity?

For people living with hard-to-heal wounds, recovery can take months or even years. Beyond the physical pain, these wounds can affect independence, mobility and everyday life. At Bioelectrix, researchers are developing a technology inspired by the body's natural electrical signals, exploring how electrical stimulation could support wound healing.

We spoke with José, CTO of Bioelectrix, about the science behind the innovation, the challenges of turning research into a medical device and the importance of having the right support along the way.

  1. Did you know electricity plays a role in how our bodies heal wounds?

"Whenever you get injured, an electric field forms around the edges of the wound. It acts like a signpost, helping guide cells toward the damaged tissue.

My background is in biomedical engineering, where I worked on electrodes for brain interfaces. I was fascinated by how electricity influences so many processes in the body, and that eventually led us to explore its potential in wound healing."

  1. How is Bioelectrix's approach different from conventional wound care?

"We're developing a technology that mimics the body's natural electrical fields using direct current stimulation.

The idea is to guide cell movement and support the healing process. Our patented technology is designed to deliver this stimulation while protecting the surrounding skin.

We've spent years developing and testing the technology using human skin cells and human skin models."

  1. What's been the biggest learning in moving from research to building a medical device company?

"As researchers, we understand the science and engineering behind our technology. But developing a medical device involves so much more.

Suddenly, you need to understand regulatory requirements, intellectual property, market access and reimbursement. These aren't necessarily things you're familiar with when you come from a research background.

You quickly realize that having a promising technology is only one part of the journey."

  1. How has being part of CO-AX supported Bioelectrix on that journey?

"One thing we've learned is how important it is to have the right people around you.

We understand our technology, but building a medical device company means navigating areas where we don't always have the expertise ourselves.

Through CO-AX, we've received guidance on regulatory affairs, intellectual property and market access, as well as introductions to investors and industry partners.

What's valuable is knowing that when we face a new challenge, there are people we can turn to who understand what we're trying to achieve."
