Sahlgrenska Science Park has been awarded approximately SEK 1.1 million in planning support from Vinnova

Vinnova, Sweden’s innovation agency, has awarded Sahlgrenska Science Park approx 1,1 million SEK to develop a Swedish initiative around ‘BioConvergence’ – where biotechnology meets artificial intelligence and quantum technology. As a neutral innovation actor and meeting arena for the life science ecosystem in western Sweden, Sahlgrenska Science Park drives initiatives that strengthen collaboration between academia, industry and society.

The funding is provided within Vinnova’s call Vision for World-Leading Research and Innovation, which aims to create the conditions for future excellence clusters in strategically important technology areas. The project, BioConvergence Excellence Cluster, runs from October 2025 to March 2026 and is led by Sahlgrenska Science Park in collaboration with 20+ partners from the life science and tech ecosystems.

Building foundation for future innovation

During the planning phase, the partners will jointly develop an overall vision, initiate international collaborations and identify strategic strengths and opportunities for a future excellence cluster. The goal is to bring together actors from academia, industry and the public sector to strengthen Sweden’s global competitiveness at the intersection of life science, AI and advanced digital technology.

– This support gives us the opportunity to explore how we can create a strong, national interdisciplinary platform where research and innovation grow together. ‘BioConvergence’ is a concept with limitless potential, and we look forward to leading this work, says Cecilia Edebo, CEO, Sahlgrenska Science Park.

Part of a broader national initiative

Vinnova’s call has supported a first group of projects that explore strategic technology areas with high future potential. The objective is to prepare the ground for future excellence clusters that could make Sweden a global leader.

For Sahlgrenska Science Park, the funding represents an important step in strengthening western Sweden’s position in life science and advanced technology, in line with the organisation’s mission to promote sustainable growth through collaboration, entrepreneurship and innovation.
