To ensure that advancement made in academia benefits society it is important that researcher engage in translating their research for wider user.
This can be done through either close collaboration with existing companies, that can assist with defining relevant research questions, or through establishing new companies that focus on brining research to market. This can be done without compromising the objective of fundamental research at universities, where focus is on generating new knowledge and understanding, simply through being alert for when key discoveries and research results have translational potential.
This alertness can be obtained through engaging in discussion with established companies, entrepreneurs and investors, and perhaps an initial idea may not be good, but often it can be pivoted to a better business case.
